Oceanway Ride

Kate Reilly has invested 2.5 years into developing a truly iconic recreational cycling event that captures the imagination of our “phcling spirits” – that deep itch to get fit and see the world at the same time…or something like that.

As organisers of events know, it is not an easy task to pull all the pieces together to create an event that sticks, that has you wanting to come back for more.  Well Kate managed to do this “with a little help from her friends” and among her new friends is that tireless cycling magnet Phil Liggett who made the Gold Coast home for a few days last week.

What Phil did was bind a willing Gold Coast Cycling community from the very young to the very old. He grabbed that amazing intersection of community and cycling that binds us as individuals and it binds us as community, galvanising and liberating. Maybe it’s our roots in childhood of cycling memories, maybe it’s the perceived freedom of cycling or maybe it’s the very camaraderie of cycling together?

For me it’s difficult to isolate to one thing, and it’s absolutely fantastic to share a ride with all those other cyclists who just love life.

To pull off a successful cycling event these days requires attention to detail and an absolute shared vision by a passionate team.  But really that is just the horse power part of the equation. A very successful event requires the visionary and a person that has more passion, more vision and the dogged energy, if not stubbiness to drive it over the line. This is not anywhere as easy as it would appear to the masses.

Kate Reilly had the idea and she drove it over the line surrounded by people who were infected by her vision, her passion and her determination to succeed.  The Gold Coast Community rallied around her as it became apparent just how significant and iconic this event is and will be.

Phil Liggett also recognised this and threw in his support and expertise. The measure of this “phycling” man is and was immense at all levels of the cycling spectrum as you will see in the photos below.

Well done and congratulations Kate and your very passionate and visionary team.

See you in 2017!

Steve
