Sharp left turn Currumbin Hill

On the return trip as you pass the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, and begin to climb a short hill, you will need to be aware of a sharp left hand turn that you will need to make just before the crest of this hill. Take the sharp left and you will then be climbing a very short and sharp 10% (approx.) for 2oo metres and then descend down a winding road to rejoin the original route that you were originally cycling. From there you can retrace your steps back home.

Footpath Cycling Section

Returning home at the Northern Burleigh end involves a short section of cycling on the footpath (sidewalk)  between North Burleigh & Miami.

Hazards you may experience

  • Traffic Build up on return to coastline
  • Coastline on return: Tourists/pedestrians often cross anywhere without looking.
  • Hedges Avenue (Millionaires row) has a 2 way bike lane and a one way vehicle lane. Runners, skateboarders, pedestrians, prams often with headphones, illegally use this lane and can create havoc…please be very careful especially with large groups of cyclists moving in both directions.
  • Car doors opening on to Cycle lanes
  • Remember this is a tourist region where people can become overly relaxed and lax on road rules. Typically everything flows very well with minimal cycling incidents

Cycling at approximately average of 30km’s/hr (18.8/mls/hr) you will reach Main Beach in…

  • 50 mins North of Currumbin
    30 mins North of Burliegh
    15 mins north of Broadbeach
5 mins North of Central Surfers
25 mins South of Runaway Bay

Safety is important

If you see a group when out cycling and want to join it, always join from the rear and left hand side of the road, let them know you are there, most groups expect visitors to tag along and are very helpful.

Point Danger Magic

Point Danger is a great turning spot in our Gold Coast Cycling Experience, it is also the border point literally between Queensland and NSW. The views are fantastic and the ambience is special, so make sure you park your legs here for at least one good selfie and post on fB or or Instagram #ridegc

“A lovely walking trail wraps around Greenmount Hill connecting Greenmount Beach to Rainbow Bay from which you can head up the hill to the exotically named Point Danger and plant one foot in Queensland and another in New South Wales at this lookout which is also a great place for whale watching. Named after the schooner Coolangatta which was wrecked here in 1846, this suburb exudes an old-school beachside charm where you can still find a milkshake in a tin cup. It combines this with world-class oceanfront hotels, restaurants and clubs, the most popular of which is Twin Towns Services Club, home to local and international acts. Flock to Coolangatta for retro festivals and, due to the summer time difference with Tweed Heads, celebrate New Years twice. Now that’s a good resolution.”

So what is so good about the Oceanway Express Ride?

If you are new to the Gold Coast or visiting, this ride is a fantastic ride route and is predominantly flat. This route is busiest on Saturday and Sundays by most of the social group riders and also serves as a base to access the hill climbs.

If you are on the Gold Coast holidaying then you will enjoy the views, the cafes and pristine coastline views

Key Points to look for are

  1. Burleigh Car Park; A very popular starting/finishing point for group rides. The Oceanway Express route takes you through the car park – entry is opposite the tavern, continue riding south toward the Surf Club where you will find the exit back onto the highway. Continue on through the intersection and over a hill across the Tallebudgera Creek.
  2. Tallebudgera Creek/ Talle Surf Club intersection; There is a safer inland route to Currumbin via residential streets with good bike lanes. (See #1 Key Route Observations above)
  3. Currumbin Village; Currumbin’s is a magical coastal beach front Cafe strip, where I am sure you will be very tempted to stop and enjoy. You will cycle through this strip and turn left at a roundabout as you approach the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, where you head to Tugan Village (expect a nice little kicker of a hill to climb over 50mtrs)
  4. Tugun Village to Kirra; As you move through Tugun you will be cycling on a parallel internal road to the highway which moves south to the Coolangatta (Gold Coast Airport on your far right). This internal road will take straight through to Kirra as you continue to hug the coastline. Most local cyclists take a left turn at “Gibson Street” which will take you to Pacific Parade, The Parade hugs the Beach (magnificent views) and will deliver you into Kirra. If you are looking for coffee, watch out for Kirramasu Cafe – a cyclist favourite.
Kirra is the entry point the to Coolangatta. When you reach the end of the Cooloongatta Beach strip there is a T intersection and a sharp left up a hill, you are nearly there, just one more climb, short but sharp, and you will be at the car park on top of Point Danger . Check out Cafe d’Bar which is a popular cafe.
    All cafes see here

Most levels of fitness are suitable for this ride, although the 2 climbs into Point Danger are very steep and challenging.
There is also a flatter back door (less steep) option around to the right of Point Danger.

The Oceanway Express is a fantastic ride to get your Gold Coast Cycling bearings and a great tourist experience as it can be a scenic amble or a flat out pace…totally your choice.

Gold Coast’s and the climate here allows you a very good cycling experience all year round. T
